Nintendo to cease European sales of Switch 1 models in February 2027

Nintendo announced that it will stop supplying the original Nintendo Switch family – the standard Switch, Switch Lite and Switch OLED – to European retailers from mid‑February 2027. The decision follows the European Union’s new Right‑to‑Repair battery regulation, which will require all portable electronic devices sold in the bloc to have user‑replaceable batteries after that date. Because the first‑generation Switch was not designed for a removable battery, Nintendo will not redesign it and will instead withdraw the hardware from the European market while continuing production through 2026 to meet existing demand.

To comply with the rule, Nintendo will roll out a revised Nintendo Switch 2 and related accessories (Joy‑Con 2, Pro Controller, N64 and GameCube controllers) with replaceable batteries, beginning in summer 2026. The revised Switch 2 will weigh about 10 g more and its battery capacity will be roughly 1 % lower (5 172 mAh versus 5 220 mAh). Similar minor weight and capacity changes apply to the updated controllers. The company emphasized that functionality and online services (eShop, Switch Online) will remain unchanged for existing Switch 1 owners.

Nintendo clarified that sales of the Switch family will continue unchanged outside the European market, so users in the United States, Japan and other regions will still be able to purchase new units.
