Nio faces sharp sales decline and restructuring in Europe

Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer Nio is facing significant challenges in the European market, characterized by a sharp decline in sales in Germany. Data from the German Federal Motor Transport Authority shows only 19 new Nio registrations between January and August 2026, representing a 90.1 percent decrease compared to the same period the previous year.

In response to these struggles, Nio is restructuring its European operations. The company has shifted toward a distribution partner model in most of Europe, excluding Norway, and has moved toward a centralized European management structure. This transition included the departure of David Sultzer, the head of Nio's German business unit. Additionally, Nio is closing several hubs and service locations in Germany, such as those in Cologne and Weiterstadt, leaving only a limited presence in cities like Munich, Frankfurt, Düsseldorf, and Berlin.

Despite rapid global growth, Nio has struggled to compete with established brands like Tesla, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz in Europe. While the Austrian electric vehicle market has seen growth, Nio remains a marginal player there. The company has also indicated it will not introduce new model generations in Europe before the end of 2027 or build further battery-swapping stations in the region.
