NioCorp advances Elk Creek mine project with federal support

NioCorp Developments is advancing its Elk Creek Critical Minerals Project in Nebraska, a move supported by federal and state officials aimed at bolstering domestic supplies of minerals essential for defense, aerospace, and advanced manufacturing. The project recently received a letter of support from the Export-Import Bank of the United States as part of a process to secure approximately $840 million in federal financing.

NioCorp CEO Mark Smith stated the facility is designed to process eight different mineral products—including niobium, scandium, titanium, and rare earth elements like dysprosium and terbium—on-site in Nebraska. This approach aims to prevent the need for sending raw materials overseas for processing, addressing concerns regarding foreign dominance in the mineral supply chain.

The project is expected to have significant economic impacts, with estimates suggesting it could support 1,200 construction jobs and 500 permanent skilled positions over an anticipated 40-year mine life. Officials, including Nebraska Governor Jim Pillen and Senator Deb Fischer, framed the development as a critical step toward national security and domestic resource independence.
