Nioro du Rip expects satisfactory harvests despite lower rainfall
Agricultural officials in the Nioro du Rip department of the Kaolack region anticipate a satisfactory harvest for the 2026 season. Guy Valentin Médang, head of the Departmental Rural Development Service (SDDR), noted that while total rainfall accumulation is lower than last year, the effective distribution of precipitation throughout the rainy season has favored crop development.
No single rainfall event exceeded 100 millimeters, with the maximum recorded accumulation reaching 79 millimeters. However, the regular timing of the rains has supported the growth of various crops, including millet, green maize, and short-cycle peanuts. The region is also seeing an increased presence of maize, sorghum, rice, and cowpea.
The availability of essential agricultural inputs, such as seeds and fertilizers, has also contributed to positive outlooks. Increased quotas for these supplies helped farmers manage planting schedules effectively, mitigating risks often associated with distribution delays.
