Nippon Life plans $13 billion for US data center financing
Nippon Life Insurance plans to invest approximately 2 trillion yen (about $13 billion) into infrastructure financing, with a significant focus on constructing data centers in the United States.
The insurer intends to utilize project finance arrangements, where loans are repaid through the cash flows generated by the specific projects. This strategy is driven by the pursuit of attractive average spreads exceeding 2%, which outperform comparable domestic Japanese investments. The move aligns with a surge in global data center capacity, much of which is concentrated in the US due to rising demand for AI infrastructure.
Nippon Life aims to double its total outstanding project finance balance to 2 trillion yen by fiscal 2035. Additionally, the company is considering expanding its involvement in the Japanese data center loan market by the end of fiscal 2026.
