NIPSCO faces investigation after catastrophic Indiana power outages

NIPSCO is facing intense scrutiny and potential legal action following a catastrophic derecho on August 11, 2026, which left approximately 374,500 customers without electricity. Some residents in Northwest Indiana experienced outages lasting nearly two weeks, resulting in lost income and food spoilage.

Indiana Governor Mike Braun has directed the Indiana Office of Utility Consumer Counselor to petition the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission to investigate the utility. The requested review aims to examine NIPSCO’s storm preparation, restoration response, and vegetation management practices, as well as whether funds intended for infrastructure and reliability were used appropriately.

In response to the crisis, NIPSCO has paused electricity disconnections and collection activities through September and pledged $2 million to community foundations. However, state lawmakers, including Representative Chuck Moseley, have called for more significant relief, such as full bill credits for the duration of the outages. Lawmakers are also seeking separate public reviews and hearings to ensure accountability.
