Nirmal Ghosh arrested in RG Kar cremation conspiracy probe

West Bengal police have arrested former Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLA Nirmal Ghosh and neighbor Sanjeev Mukherjee in connection with a conspiracy involving the hurried cremation of a doctor murdered at RG Kar Medical College in August 2024.

Following a directive from Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, a fresh investigation was launched into allegations that the victim's body was cremated prematurely to prevent a second autopsy and destroy evidence. The victim's father filed a complaint alleging that Ghosh, along with local councillor Somnath Dey and Mukherjee, used political influence to bypass family consent and cremation protocols.

Nirmal Ghosh was apprehended at a hotel in Odisha after police traced his movements via mobile tower data. Mukherjee was arrested in Kolkata. A third accused, Somnath Dey, remains at large. The arrests have drawn significant public attention, with crowds reportedly attacking the accused with eggs and mud outside a police station. This new probe is being conducted by the Barrackpore Police Commissionerate and is separate from the ongoing CBI investigation into the original rape and murder case.
