Nirmala Sitharaman signals openness to capital gains tax discussions
Indian Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has signaled that the government is open to discussing changes to capital gains taxation and the securities transaction tax (STT). Speaking at the Bloomberg New Economy Forum in New Delhi, Sitharaman acknowledged the ongoing debate regarding long-term capital gains (LTCG) tax and the taxation of various asset classes.
While she did not promise specific changes, noting that budget preparations have already commenced, she indicated that the government is listening to concerns from both domestic and international stakeholders. The discussion centers on whether India's capital market framework remains competitive enough to attract and retain long-term domestic and foreign capital.
Investor optimism rose following these remarks, with the Sensex jumping 1,109 points. The comments address long-standing concerns regarding the cost of investing in Indian equities and the perceived lack of tax parity across different asset classes. Sitharaman also noted that recent foreign capital outflows should be viewed alongside a global reallocation of funds toward the United States, particularly in frontier artificial intelligence sectors.
