Nirvana to receive Video Vanguard Award at 2026 MTV VMAs

MTV has announced that the legendary grunge band Nirvana will receive the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award at the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards. The ceremony is scheduled for September 27 at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles. The announcement coincides with the 34th anniversary of the band’s historic and chaotic 1992 VMA performance, where they performed ‘Lithium’ and teased the unreleased song ‘Rape Me’.

Snoop Dogg has been tapped to host the event and will also serve as an executive producer. This marks the first time the VMAs have returned to the West Coast since 2017. The award recognizes Nirvana’s profound impact on music video innovation and pop culture, specifically highlighting iconic visuals for tracks such as ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’, ‘Come as You Are’, and ‘Heart-Shaped Box’.

While the band has been defunct since the death of frontman Kurt Cobain in 1994, surviving members Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic have occasionally performed together for tributes. It remains unconfirmed if they will attend the ceremony to accept the honor. The broadcast will air live on CBS and MTV, with streaming available on Paramount+.
