The 35th anniversary of Nirvana’s single ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ marks a pivotal moment in rock history. Released in September 1991, the track transitioned grunge from an underground club scene into the mainstream, challenging the dominance of hair metal and stadium rock.

Interestingly, the song’s title originated from a misunderstanding. In 1990, Kathleen Hanna wrote ‘Kurt smells like Teen Spirit’ on Kurt Cobain’s wall after seeing a brand of deodorant with that name. Cobain, unaware of the product, interpreted the phrase as a metaphor for the ‘spirit of youth’ and rebellion, which aligned with the themes of his generation.
