NISA account holders in Japan reach 30.48 million
NISA (Nippon Individual Savings Account) usage in Japan has seen significant growth, with the number of accounts reaching approximately 30.48 million as of late June 2026. This represents an 8.1% increase from the end of 2025. The 50s age group holds the largest number of accounts, while the 20s age group saw the highest growth rate among adults at 11.8%.
Regarding tax implications, investors should note that losses incurred within a NISA account cannot be used to offset profits in taxable accounts (Tokutei Kouza) to reduce tax liability. Unlike taxable accounts, where losses can be carried forward for three years, NISA losses are treated as non-existent for tax calculation purposes. Consequently, selling assets at a loss within a NISA account will not decrease the taxes owed on gains made in a separate taxable account.
