Niscemi landslide investigation may conclude by January

Salvatore Vella, the chief prosecutor of Gela, has announced that the first phase of the investigation into the Niscemi landslide could conclude by January. The landslide, which spans over four kilometers near the historic center of Niscemi, has prompted a massive probe into decades of negligence.

Thirteen individuals are currently under investigation, including the last four presidents of the Sicilian Region, regional officials, and representatives from a temporary enterprise association. The investigation focuses on the failure to implement mitigation and consolidation works following the initial landslide in 1997.

The inquiry is divided into three chronological phases: the period from 1997 to 1999 regarding unfulfilled mitigation contracts; the period from 2010 to 2016 following a contract termination for non-compliance; and the period from 2016 to the present. Investigators are specifically examining uncompleted works, water management systems, and construction within red zones. The prosecutor's office is working alongside the Caltanissetta Mobile Squad, the Rome SCO, and the Niscemi police department.
