Niscemi landslide mitigation project approved with 32 million euro budget

Extraordinary Commissioner Fabio Ciciliano has approved a 32 million euro project to mitigate a major landslide in Niscemi, Sicily. The central component of the plan is the construction of a 1,500-meter deep drainage tunnel designed to control underground water circulation and reduce interstitial pressure to improve the stability of the landslide's central body.

Additional stabilization measures include reprofiling one kilometer of slopes, sealing fissures, and restoring the local hydraulic network to reduce erosion. The project also aims to manage surface water through new gutter channels to intercept and control runoff in unserved areas.

In a separate decree, the Commissioner allocated 688,000 euros to the Municipality of Niscemi as an advance for autonomous housing contributions to support residents who have been displaced from their homes.
