Niscemi landslide: New fissure opens on hillside

A new fissure has opened on the front of the landslide in Niscemi, Sicily, which previously caused damage to the historic center in January. Mayor Massimiliano Conti confirmed the new crack is being monitored and emphasized that securing the hillside is the absolute priority before any reconstruction efforts can begin.

Institutional responses are being organized to address the ongoing emergency. Commissioner Fabio Ciciliano is scheduled to visit Niscemi next Tuesday to meet with local authorities and the displaced persons' committee to assess necessary interventions.

Further high-level visits are planned for the coming weeks. On September 13, Cardinal Matteo Zuppi, President of the Italian Episcopal Conference, will visit alongside Caritas representatives to support the affected population. Additionally, Minister Adolfo Urso is expected in October to discuss initiatives to support the local productive fabric, involving Eni.
