Niscemi residents protest over landslide safety and lack of information
Residents, displaced persons, and local committees in Niscemi have held a demonstration to demand information and safety guarantees nine months after a major landslide in January. Protesters expressed significant fear regarding the potential for further ground movement and the lack of adequate warning and prevention systems.
Participants highlighted the uncertainty faced by those who have returned to homes near the restricted red zone. The community is calling for technical inspections and official reassurances from qualified bodies to ensure the territory is stable. There is also growing concern that institutional attention toward the crisis is diminishing.
In response to economic concerns, Minister of Enterprises Adolfo Urso noted that revitalizing the local economy may require parliamentary intervention to establish an urban free zone, which would involve defining specific perimeters, incentives, and financial coverage.
