Nishan Moheeputh sentenced to six months in prison for sexual assault

Plastic surgeon Dr. Nishan Moheeputh has been sentenced to six months in prison by the Intermediate Court following a conviction for indecent assault. The sentencing was delivered by Magistrate Jade Ngan Chai King.

The incident occurred on April 29, 2022, during a consultation at a private clinic. The complainant, a female police officer, alleged that Dr. Moheeputh touched her breasts and kissed her multiple times without consent. While the defendant pleaded not guilty and contested the account, the court relied on WhatsApp exchanges following the incident and noted the consistency of the complainant’s testimony.

During sentencing, Principal State Counsel Damodarsingh Bissessur argued for imprisonment, stating the conduct defied the public trust placed in medical professionals. The defense, represented by Nirmal Busgopaul, argued against a custodial sentence. Dr. Moheeputh has indicated his intention to appeal the decision.
