Nissan adjusts global production amid UK supply recovery and Mexico plant closures
Nissan is navigating significant manufacturing shifts across its global operations. In the United Kingdom, the Sunderland plant has resolved a months-long supply chain bottleneck that severely limited the production of the Nissan Leaf. Previously, the plant produced only 3,620 units for the European market compared to 27,000 at the Tochigi plant in Japan. Stabilizing Sunderland is considered vital for Nissan’s European electric vehicle pipeline, including the upcoming electric Nissan Juke slated for 2027.
In Mexico, Nissan has seen a 25.1% decrease in vehicle assembly between January and May compared to the previous year. This decline follows the permanent closure of the CIVAC plant in Morelos, which had operated for over six decades. While production of the NP300 Frontier has moved to Aguascalientes, the company is also restructuring its industrial network. The COMPAS joint venture in Aguascalientes, previously shared with Daimler, is scheduled to cease operations in 2026 due to shifting consumer preferences and automotive dynamics.
