Nissan Fairlady Z: From Z32's historic performance to modern RZ34 tuning

The Nissan Fairlady Z series continues to hold significance in automotive history and the modern tuning market. The Z32 model, introduced in 1989, represented a major technological leap for Nissan. Aiming to compete with Porsche, it featured a 3.0L V6 twin-turbo engine. While intended to reach 300ps, government intervention regarding traffic safety led to a voluntary industry limit of 280ps in Japan, a standard that defined the era.

The Z32 introduced advanced features such as the Super HICAS four-wheel steering system and multi-link suspension, moving away from the traditional straight-six engine to a V6 configuration. Its wide-and-low design and innovative headlight units were noted for their aesthetic impact, with some accounts suggesting the technology influenced later supercar designs.

In the modern era, the RZ34 Fairlady Z remains a focus for specialized tuning. Garage Chikara, a Mie Prefecture-based shop, focuses on developing high-performance parts for the RZ34. By maintaining an extensive fleet of various Z models, including 15 Z34s and 4 RZ34s, the shop develops components like suspension springs, brake kits, and stainless steel exhaust systems designed to balance street usability with track performance.
