Nissan Micra and Renault 5 reveal platform differentiation strategy
Renault Group is implementing a new strategy to ensure that vehicles produced for partner manufacturers are more distinctly differentiated from Renault’s own models. This shift follows internal assessments that the new Nissan Micra, which shares the RGMP Small platform with the Renault 5, Renault 4, and Twingo, appeared too similar to its French counterpart.
While the vehicles share technical foundations, Renault CEO François Provost indicated that future collaborations will require more significant visual and structural distinctions to avoid brand overlap. This comes as the industry balances the cost-efficiencies of shared platforms with the necessity of maintaining unique brand identities.
In practical comparisons, the Nissan Micra has demonstrated high efficiency. In a 194-kilometer test conducted by Vision E Drive, the Micra achieved an average consumption of 13.5 kWh per 100 km, outperforming the Cupra Raval VZ, which used 15.2 kWh per 100 km. The Micra also showed superior urban efficiency and maneuverability compared to the heavier Cupra model.
