Moldova reports €2.33 million in losses from Nistru river pollution

A Post-Disaster Needs Assessment report, presented on October 16 by the National Crisis Management Center in partnership with the European Union and the United Nations, estimates that petroleum pollution in the Nistru river caused €2.33 million (approximately 46 million lei) in losses for Moldova.

The pollution was triggered in the spring of 2026 following a Russian attack on the Novodnestrovsk hydroelectric power plant in Ukraine. While no physical infrastructure or buildings were destroyed, the costs stem from emergency interventions and the maintenance of public services. The largest portion of the losses, €1.18 million, was attributed to disaster risk reduction. Other costs included €724,000 for the environment, €329,000 for water and sanitation, and €97,000 for the health sector.

The crisis affected approximately 200,000 people, with 100,000 losing temporary access to centralized water supplies following the preventive suspension of water intake at Cosăuți. Authorities distributed over 620 tons of potable and technical water to mitigate the impact. The Soroca district was identified as the most affected area. During the crisis, some non-urgent medical services were postponed, and schools in Bălți temporarily transitioned to online learning.
