Nistru River water levels drop as Novodnistrovsk Reservoir reserves decline
The hydrological situation on the Nistru River is worsening as water reserves in the Novodnistrovsk Reservoir continue to decline. During the first 20 days of September, the water level in the reservoir dropped by approximately 68 centimeters, falling from 111.83 meters to 111.15 meters. This level remains more than 10 meters below the normal elevation of 121.5 meters.
According to Environment Minister Gheorghe Hajder, approximately 63.4 million cubic meters more water was evacuated from the reservoir than entered it during this period. While the average inflow was about 23 m³/s, outflows remained constant at 60 m³/s. Although some precipitation has been recorded in Moldova, rainfall in the upper basin in Ukraine has been insufficient to improve the hydrological situation or replenish the reserves.
In response to the reduced flows, the Ministry of Environment is monitoring the river's discharge and reservoir reserves. Authorities are working to remove illegal dams and constructions blocking waterways, cleaning riverbeds, and strengthening hydro-technical infrastructure. The Ministry has urged the population and economic agents to use water rationally, repair leaks in aqueduct networks, and avoid using potable water for non-essential activities.
