Niterói bicycle lane sets record with over 8,000 cyclists in one day

The Marquês do Paraná bicycle lane in Niterói has set a new circulation record, recording 8,213 cyclists in a single day. This figure surpasses the previous record of 7,965 set in May 2026 and represents a 28% increase in bicycle traffic compared to the beginning of 2025.

The lane, which connects the city center to the South Zone, is currently considered the busiest bicycle lane in Brazil according to monitoring data. The traffic is tracked using the Contabike system, provided by Eco-Counter Brasil, which allows the municipality to monitor usage patterns across nine different points in the city.

Filipe Simões, coordinator of Niterói de Bicicleta, stated that the data demonstrates that cycling has moved beyond a leisure activity to become a significant component of daily commuting for thousands of residents.
