Niterói environmental guards rescue 450 illegally sold crabs
Environmental agents in Niterói rescued and released 450 uçá crabs that were being sold illegally. The crustaceans were returned to the Itaipu mangroves during the current closed season, which began on October 1st.
The uçá crab is considered a “gardener of the mangrove” because it facilitates nutrient circulation and soil fertilization by decomposing organic matter. Under Ibama regulations, the closed season for these crabs runs from October 1st to November 30th for both sexes, with continued protection for females throughout December.
Authorities have intensified inspections to combat illegal capture and trade, noting that the species is currently in its reproductive period. Officials advise the public against purchasing live crabs during this restricted period to ensure the continuity of the species.
