Niterói family protests death of man shot during police operation

Family members of Renan Guimarães Machado, 29, held a protest in Niterói, Rio de Janeiro, demanding justice following his death. Relatives claim Machado was shot during a Military Police operation in Itaipu on August 6.

According to the family, Machado was on his lunch break when officers entered the area. They allege he was shot in the leg despite attempting to exit the scene. Machado died on August 10 after four days of hospitalization.

The Military Police stated that during the operation, which followed reports of armed individuals and drug trafficking, officers were targeted by gunfire from two suspects. The police reported that they reacted to the shots and located a wounded suspect, who was wearing an electronic ankle monitor and was taken to the hospital under custody.
