Niterói implements first municipal sports-focused school
The city of Niterói is implementing its first municipal school dedicated to sports by transforming the Antineia Silveira Miranda Municipal School in the Caramujo neighborhood. Rather than opening a new facility, the city is reorganizing the pedagogical model of this existing full-time school for the final years of elementary education.
The new curriculum integrates sports as a core pillar, moving beyond traditional weekly physical education classes. Students will participate in several hours of sports per week, allowing them to experiment with various modalities before choosing a specific discipline for more frequent training. The model includes teacher-coaches and encourages participation in competitions.
Mayor Rodrigo Neves stated that the initiative aims to use sports as a tool for social inclusion and transformation. The project is being developed throughout 2026, involving investments in infrastructure and pedagogical monitoring. While the broad goals have been announced, specific details regarding the exact number of weekly sports hours, available modalities, and enrollment procedures have not yet been fully disclosed.
