Niterói bans sports betting advertisements in public spaces
The city of Niterói has issued a decree banning the advertising of sports betting platforms and fixed-odds games in public spaces and outdoor advertising. Signed by Mayor Rodrigo Neves, the measure aims to reduce public exposure to gambling, specifically targeting the protection of children and adolescents from risks such as compulsive gambling, mental health issues, and financial debt.
The decree prohibits the use of brand names, websites, apps, promotions, logos, mascots, and slogans that could identify betting companies, even if used in isolation. Entities currently displaying such advertisements have 10 days to remove or adapt them. While the ban restricts municipal outdoor advertising and public space usage, it does not affect the legal operation of betting companies, which remains regulated at the federal level. Enforcement will be managed by the Secretariat of Public Order (Seop).
In separate regional news, São Gonçalo held a meeting to begin constructing its Municipal Permanent Education Plan for Social Assistance, while Palotina's Municipal Health Council has invited residents to participate in monthly public meetings to discuss local health policies.
