Niterói Military Police sergeant shoots and kills pizzaiolo
Danilo Jander Francisco Alves, a 26-year-old pizzaiolo, has died after being shot in the head by a Military Police sergeant in Niterói, Brazil. The incident occurred on a Saturday afternoon in the Icaraí neighborhood during a patrol by the Niterói Presente program.
According to police reports, the shooting took place during an attempt to stop the victim, who was riding a motorcycle. The sergeant involved claimed the shot was unintentional, occurring as he dismounted after believing the victim was reaching for his waist. However, witnesses and a fellow officer have provided conflicting accounts; one witness stated the victim had already stopped and raised his hands before being hit.
The victim's family has contested the police version of events, noting that the motorcycle was regular and the victim was a licensed driver. No illicit items were found in the victim's possession following the encounter. The sergeant responsible for the shot was arrested and taken to a corporate prison unit, and the Military Police Internal Affairs department has opened an investigation into the circumstances of the shooting.
