Niterói opens Cantareira Innovation District to spur science, tech

The city of Niterói inaugurated the Cantareira Innovation District on 25 July, converting a restored historic building in the Cantareira neighbourhood into a hub that brings together universities, researchers, startups, companies and public institutions. The district aims to translate academic research into technological solutions, new businesses and qualified jobs while supporting the broader revitalisation of Niterói’s centre.

Key partners include the Federal University of Fluminense (UFF), IBM, NVIDIA, Finep, Aneel, Firjan and Petrobras. Mayor Rodrigo Neves said the city hosts more than 72 000 university students and highlighted that the new space will “connect knowledge with industry, generate innovation and create opportunities for the economy and society.” The opening coincides with the 78th Annual Meeting of the Brazilian Society for the Progress of Science (SBPC), expected to draw around 50 000 participants between 26 July and 1 August.

The district will progressively install high‑performance computing infrastructure and foster projects in artificial intelligence, quantum computing and other advanced technologies, positioning Niterói as a leading Brazilian knowledge‑production centre.
