Niterói opens new University Audiovisual Museum space
The University Audiovisual Museum (MAU) has inaugurated a new exhibition space at the Institute of Art and Social Communication (IACS) in Niterói. Supported by the Niterói City Hall, the museum is part of the Fluminense Federal University's Audiovisual Preservation University Laboratory (LUPA-UFF).
Starting August 26, the museum will be open to the public for free every Wednesday from 10:00 to 17:00. The collection includes over 500 items, with approximately 50 pieces on display, ranging from the late 19th century to the 1970s. Featured artifacts include historical cameras, projectors, sound recorders, magic lantern plates, and various film formats.
The long-term exhibition, titled ‘A multiplicidade do cinema’, is curated by Professor Rafael de Luna Freire. It focuses on the diversity of the collection, emphasizing the history of amateur cinema in the state of Rio de Janeiro and records produced by ordinary citizens. Notable items include a Debrie Parvo L camera once owned by actress Carmen Santos.
