Niterói ranks as top cycling city in Latin America
Niterói has ranked first among Latin American municipalities in the Copenhagenize 2025 index, an international ranking that evaluates cycling infrastructure, bicycle usage, and support policies for cyclists.
The city features a 91-kilometer network of bike lanes, cycle paths, and shared sidewalks. High usage is evident on the Avenida Marquês do Paraná bike lane, which recently recorded a record of nearly 7,500 cyclists in a single day.
To support daily commuting, the city utilizes the NitBike system, a free bicycle-sharing program that has facilitated over 2 million trips since its 2024 implementation. The system includes 750 bicycles and 63 stations. Additionally, Niterói has expanded bicycle parking facilities, such as the Charitas station near catamaran terminals and the Arariboia station in the city center, to integrate cycling with public transportation.
