Niterói records historic drop in street robberies and zero cargo thefts in June

In June 2026, the Brazilian city of Niterói posted the lowest number of street robberies since the start of its crime statistics in 2003, with incidents falling 44% from 88 to 49 compared with the same month a year earlier. Vehicle thefts also declined sharply, dropping nearly 58% from 19 cases to just eight, the lowest figure on record. Notably, the city recorded zero cargo‑theft incidents for the month, bringing the first‑semester total to three cases.

Mayor Rodrigo Neves credited the results to a sustained public‑safety strategy that expanded municipal support for police forces, invested in technology such as video monitoring, electronic fencing and real‑time vehicle identification, and strengthened the Integrated Public‑Safety Center. He emphasized that the integrated work of the municipal guard, military, civil and federal police contributed to the concrete outcomes and that the administration will continue to advance security measures.
