Niterói reports lowest street robbery rates since 2003

Niterói has recorded its lowest number of street robberies for the January-to-September period since the beginning of available historical records in 2003. Between January and September 2026, the city reported 557 street robberies, representing a 38.72% decrease compared to the 909 cases recorded during the same period in 2025.

The reduction was observed across all categories of street robbery. Robberies against pedestrians fell by 34.66%, from 580 to 379 cases. Cell phone thefts decreased by 43.48%, dropping from 299 to 169, while robberies on public transport saw a significant decline of 66.67%, falling from 30 to 10 occurrences.

Additionally, vehicle robberies in September saw a 78.57% decrease compared to the previous year. Mayor Rodrigo Neves attributed these results to a public policy focused on planning, intelligence, integration of security forces, and prevention. The data was compiled by the Niterói Public Security Observatory (OSPNit) using information from the Rio de Janeiro State Institute of Public Security (ISP).
