Karen Bass and Nithya Raman tied in Los Angeles mayoral race

As the Los Angeles mayoral election approaches on November 3, a new poll from the UC Berkeley Institute of Government and the Los Angeles Times shows incumbent Mayor Karen Bass and challenger Nithya Raman in a dead heat, with both candidates holding 40% support. This marks a significant shift from September, when Raman led Bass by 11 percentage points.

The race has become increasingly contentious. Raman’s campaign has filed ethics complaints against Thrive LA, a super PAC supporting Bass, alleging the use of an AI-generated voice to impersonate her in deceptive advertisements. Additionally, Raman faces internal friction within the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) regarding her stance on the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement.

On the policy front, the candidates offer differing approaches to the city’s housing and homelessness crises. Bass has focused on expanding affordable housing through public land partnerships and adaptive reuse ordinances, while Raman has championed stronger rent control and increased tenant protections. The election also follows a high-profile endorsement from billionaire developer Rick Caruso, who announced his support for Bass.
