Nithya Raman faces backlash over video targeting LAPD Chief

Los Angeles mayoral candidate Nithya Raman is facing intense criticism following the release of a campaign video that featured a red X over the face of LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell. The clip, which included the phrase “only you can stop fascist liars,” was filmed during an interview with influencer Ed Choi. Raman's campaign has since deleted the video, claiming the influencer was responsible for the editing and that she did not apply the label to the Chief or Mayor Karen Bass.

The Los Angeles Police Protective League condemned the imagery as “dangerous” and a “dog whistle” that could incite violence against law enforcement. The union noted that both the Mayor and the Police Chief require security details due to ongoing threats.

Beyond the video controversy, Raman has centered her campaign on a platform of police reform. She has pledged to fire Chief McDonnell if elected, citing his handling of ICE raids and immigration enforcement. Her proposed policies include increasing unarmed crisis response teams and auditing officers to ensure compliance with the city's sanctuary ordinance.
