Nitin Gadkari announces new driving licence points system and Bharat NCAP 2.0

Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari announced that the government is developing a graded points system for driving licences to improve road safety. Under this proposed framework, traffic violations will result in points being deducted from a driver’s licence, with excessive deductions leading to suspension or cancellation. Conversely, responsible motorists may receive “good” points, which could grant them incentives from insurance companies and other benefits.

Addressing the 66th SIAM Annual Convention, Gadkari noted that road safety remains a critical issue in India. He emphasized the need for stricter safety standards for buses following data showing that bus accidents claimed 3,855 lives in 2024. The government has introduced a bus body code and warned of strict action against Regional Transport Offices that fail to enforce safety norms.

Additionally, the minister announced the planned rollout of Bharat NCAP 2.0 in October 2027. This upgraded vehicle safety assessment programme is expected to provide a more comprehensive safety framework for vehicles in India.
