Nitin Gadkari claims high support from Nagpur underworld and social sectors

Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari stated at the IIM Nagpur Media Conclave 2026 that he receives significant support from diverse social sectors in Nagpur, including the city’s underworld and red-light districts. Gadkari claimed that his support in these specific areas reached as high as 92 to 99 per cent.

While acknowledging this support, Gadkari clarified that it does not imply close personal relations with criminal elements. He attributed his broad connections to his development initiatives, such as road construction, and various social work projects conducted across the spectrum. He noted that his electoral performance varies by demographic, securing approximately 70-75 per cent of the vote in highly educated areas.

Additionally, Gadkari addressed challenges facing Indian democracy, specifically criticizing the low voter turnout among educated citizens. He argued that the primary challenge to democracy is not political parties or leaders, but the commitment of the electorate to participate in the voting process.
