Nitrate levels in German groundwater exceed EU limits

Water testing conducted by the non-profit organization VSR-Gewässerschutz has revealed significant nitrate contamination in private garden wells across parts of Germany, including Bernau and Viersen. In Bernau, one in eight samples exceeded the EU limit of 50 mg/l, with specific areas like Birkholzaue and Ladeburg showing particularly high concentrations.

In the Viersen region, the contamination levels were even more pronounced, with one in every two samples exceeding the 50 mg/l threshold. The organization reports that these findings highlight the failure of ongoing adjustments to German fertilizer regulations to effectively reduce groundwater pollution.

Critics argue that recent legislative changes have focused more on avoiding penalties from the European Court of Justice rather than implementing sustainable environmental strategies. Furthermore, a ruling by the Federal Administrative Court regarding the designation of “Red Areas” has temporarily removed certain protective requirements, adding to the lack of legal certainty for agricultural operations attempting to mitigate groundwater loading.
