Nitter project to continue following legal advice after X Corp. cease-and-desist

The Nitter project, an open-source, privacy-focused alternative front-end for X (formerly Twitter), has announced it will continue operations following legal advice. This follows a period of uncertainty after X Corp. issued cease-and-desist letters on August 24, 2026, demanding the permanent removal of Nitter instances and the project's repository.

During the legal dispute, the project's repository was archived and several instances went offline. However, the public instance XCancel has already returned to operation. While the main nitter.net instance has not yet resumed normal service, the maintainer, zedeus, stated that more information will be revealed within a week.

Nitter is designed to allow users to view posts without an X account, JavaScript, or advertisements, helping to prevent IP-based tracking and browser fingerprinting. The project has faced ongoing technical challenges due to changes in how X restricts data access, including a previous period of inactivity in early 2024.
