Nitzan Alon claims Gaza war could have ended sooner
Major General Nitzan Alon, a former Israeli military negotiator for hostage releases, stated that the war in Gaza could have been concluded significantly sooner. Speaking during a Washington Institute for Near East Policy webcast, Alon suggested that a deal to return all Israeli captives could have been achieved approximately one year prior to the October 2025 ceasefire without compromising other strategic military objectives.
Alon criticized Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s assertion that “total victory” was a prerequisite for a deal, labeling the claim as false. He noted that while the October 2025 ceasefire and subsequent prisoner exchange—which released 20 Israeli captives and nearly 2,000 Palestinians—served as a strategic achievement in curbing Hamas’s military power, the conflict was unnecessarily prolonged.
The ongoing conflict has resulted in the deaths of over 74,000 Palestinians.
