Niu Lai animation film becomes viral box office hit in China
The low-budget Chinese animated film “Niu Lai” (The Arrival of the Ox) has become an unexpected box office phenomenon. Produced over five years by a mother-and-son duo, Xin Yumeng and Sun Lifang, the film reportedly cost only a few hundred to a few thousand dollars. The creators handled nearly all roles, including writing, directing, and voice acting.
Initially, the film was a commercial failure, earning only about 7,000 yuan in its first ten days. However, it experienced a massive resurgence after clips of its crude 3D modeling, stiff animation, and bizarre plot went viral on social media. Audiences began visiting theaters to experience the film’s “disastrous” quality as a form of social entertainment and meme-driven curiosity.
By mid-August, the film’s earnings had surged to over 20 million yuan, with some projections suggesting it could reach 100 million yuan. While the film’s success has sparked debate among industry professionals regarding the impact of low-quality content on cinematic standards, many viewers have embraced its perceived authenticity and “human” imperfection in an era of highly polished, AI-generated content.
