Nivea blue tin cream not a sunscreen; experts caution against hair and skin misuse

Nivea Creme, sold in its iconic blue tin since 1911, is widely used as a multi‑purpose moisturizer. Social‑media trends have promoted the product for skin, nails, hair and even as a sunscreen, but experts stress that it contains no SPF and is not formulated for sun protection.

Pharmacist Lucía Altozano of Skinpharmacy Jorge Juan 34 explains that the cream is a water‑in‑oil emulsion whose active humectant is glycerin, with panthenol present only low in the ingredient list. Eva Fernández Martínez, a pharmacist and nutritionist, notes that the base consists mainly of paraffin and microcrystalline wax, providing a barrier that prevents water loss but offering no additional skin benefits. The EU requires disclosure of seven fragrance allergens present in the product.

Both experts agree the cream can hydrate dry skin effectively, but it should not be used as a sunscreen or as a protective treatment for hair exposed to chlorine, as it lacks the necessary active ingredients and may cause irritation.
