Nizaíto dam project launched in Barahona and Pedernales

The National Institute of Hydraulic Resources (INDRHI) has launched the design phase for the Nizaíto dam project in the provinces of Barahona and Pedernales. The initiative involves constructing two cascade dams on the Nizaíto River at the La Cuevita and Villa Nizao communities.

According to INDRHI Executive Director Olmedo Caba Romano, the project is intended to improve water availability for over 90,000 people in the municipalities of Paraíso, Enriquillo, and Oviedo. Additionally, the project aims to provide efficient agricultural irrigation for approximately 80,000 tareas across several local communities.

The strategic infrastructure is expected to support tourism growth, provide flood protection, and generate approximately 4 GWh of hydroelectric energy annually through a 2 MW plant. The project scope includes hydraulic management, transmission systems, access roads, and environmental management measures.
