NJ Transit reports $4 million loss from World Cup service
NJ Transit reported a deficit of nearly $4 million following service provided for eight World Cup matches at MetLife Stadium. While the agency estimated total revenue would reach approximately $62.46 million, actual revenue was $51.68 million against costs of $55.66 million.
Ticket sales significantly underperformed expectations, bringing in $16.66 million compared to the projected $31.34 million. NJ Transit CEO Kris Kolluri attributed the lower ridership partly to FIFA making more parking available at American Dream and MetLife Stadium than originally anticipated, altering fan travel plans.
Additional expenses included enhanced safety and security measures, such as the purchase of drones and the deployment of ambassadors to assist riders. Despite the loss, the agency stated it will honor its commitment not to pass the deficit onto commuters. The shortfall is expected to be covered by advertising and real estate revenue.
