Níjar reservoir undergoes watertightness testing ahead of autumn opening

The Comunidad de Usuarios de Aguas de la Comarca de Níjar (CUCN) has begun testing the watertightness of its ninth reservoir, located in the Las Moralas area of Níjar. The infrastructure is undergoing pressure tests, with over 500 liters per second being pumped into the facility to ensure there are no leaks in the welding or structure.

Once fully operational this autumn, the reservoir will have a capacity of one cubic hectometer. The project, funded and executed by the Sociedad Mercantil Estatal de Infraestructuras Agrarias (SEIASA), is intended to secure water supplies for local farmers and the municipality, helping to mitigate water scarcity issues in the arid region.

CUCN President Antonio López stated that the reservoir is essential for ensuring the future of the local agricultural sector, which produces horticultural goods for the European market. Plans are also underway for a tenth reservoir in the El Cautivo area.
