Njeru residents demand modern market and new landfill

Residents and traders in Njeru Municipality, Buikwe District, are calling on the government to construct a modern market and relocate the municipal landfill. During a National Clean-Up Day exercise, community members and local leaders highlighted that the current Njeru Market is congested and difficult to maintain, particularly during the rainy season. They are requesting a larger facility equipped with proper sanitation infrastructure.

Additionally, residents have requested the relocation of the municipal landfill due to its proximity to residential homes. Njeru Town Clerk Paddy Kakumba stated that the government has acquired two acres of land for a new waste disposal site, pending approval from the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA).

Deputy Minister Diana Mutasingwa expressed concern regarding sanitation at the market, urging local authorities to enforce waste disposal regulations. She also advised traders against keeping animals in and around the market area to mitigate hygiene risks.
