Nökkvi Thórisson red card overturned by football prosecutor

The professional football prosecutor has overturned the red card issued to Telstar striker Nökkvi Thórisson during a recent match against SC Cambuur. The 27-year-old Icelandic player is now cleared to play in the upcoming match against FC Twente.

The incident occurred in the 22nd minute when referee Joey Kooij sent Thórisson off following a sliding tackle on Billy van Duijl. While the referee indicated contact was made with the player's knee, the prosecutor determined there was insufficient evidence to prove serious foul play or an offense justifying a direct red card.

Thórisson expressed his shock following the initial decision, stating, “It was never a red card. That is my feeling now, in the match and when I made the tackle.” The decision follows scrutiny of the incident, which was notably not reviewed by the VAR during the live match.
