NLNG urges gas industry to prioritize methane reduction for revenue

Nigeria LNG (NLNG) has called on the global gas industry to prioritize methane reduction as a core business objective rather than just an environmental obligation. Speaking at the Gastech 2026 Exhibition and Conference in Bangkok, NLNG Managing Director and CEO Adeleye Falade argued that methane emissions represent lost revenue and wasted energy that could otherwise be sold in the market.

Falade emphasized that investments in leak prevention and gas recovery can be self-funding. He cited NLNG’s new boil-off gas compressor and start-up gas recovery projects as evidence, noting that both aim for methane reductions of 10–15% and possess positive projected net present values. According to Falade, reducing methane improves asset reliability and plant efficiency, providing financial returns that extend beyond emissions reporting.

The company’s strategy involves measuring methane losses to guide investments in prevention and recovery, supported by independent verification to ensure credible reporting.
