NMBS expands Belgian rail service with new multi-year transport plan
NMBS, the Belgian national railway company, is launching a multi-year transport plan for 2026-2029, with the first phase of service changes scheduled to begin on December 13. The initiative aims to add nearly 600 trains per week across the country and improve service at 178 stations.
This expansion is part of a broader 2023-2032 contract with the Belgian State, which targets a 10% increase in train supply and a 30% growth in passenger numbers by 2032. Alongside increased frequency, NMBS is investing in station accessibility, comfort, and intermodality. Long-term goals include expanding bicycle parking to 164,000 spaces and car parking to 80,000 spaces.
Regional improvements include increased S-train frequency between Mol and Antwerp during peak hours, and enhanced connections in Vlaams-Brabant. For example, the S4 line between Aalst and Louvain-la-Neuve will see increased frequency, and the S8 connection will offer later services on Friday and Saturday evenings. Additionally, a new early morning S-train will connect Antwerp-Centraal to Puurs.
