Nigeria implements energy reforms and addresses housing crisis

Nigeria is implementing several major regulatory and economic shifts across its energy and housing sectors. The Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) has launched a nationwide enforcement campaign against fuel stations accused of under-dispensing petroleum products. In response, the Petroleum Products Retail Outlets Owners Association of Nigeria (PETROAN) has directed members to immediately inspect and calibrate dispensing meters to ensure accuracy and avoid license revocation.

In the energy market, the NMDPRA has set a September 24, 2028, target to transition the domestic gas market to a willing-buyer, willing-seller framework. This move aims to move the sector from regulated pricing to a commercially driven system based on market maturity indicators such as supply diversity and infrastructure access. Additionally, crude oil supply to domestic refineries rose by 17 per cent in August, contributing to increased local refining output.

Separately, the Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Muttaqha Darma, reported a significant housing crisis in Nigeria, stating that approximately 110 million citizens are currently unhoused. He noted that the country requires more than 16 million additional housing units to address the deficit.
