Nneka Ogwumike announces retirement from WNBA after 2026 season

Nneka Ogwumike, a prominent figure in the WNBA, has announced that she will retire from professional basketball following the conclusion of the 2026 season. The 36-year-old forward, who was selected as the first overall pick in the 2012 WNBA Draft, confirmed the decision during an interview on the ‘Boardroom Talks’ podcast.

Ogwumike’s career is marked by significant achievements, including being the 2016 WNBA MVP and a WNBA champion with the Los Angeles Sparks. An 11-time All-Star and eight-time All-WNBA selection, she has been a cornerstone of the league for 15 seasons. Beyond her on-court performance, she has held a vital leadership role as the president of the WNBA Players Association (WNBPA), where she helped negotiate transformative collective bargaining agreements.

In her announcement, Ogwumike expressed a sense of fulfillment, stating, ‘I just feel like I have poured as much as I could into this game.’ WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert praised her legacy, noting that Ogwumike’s career has been defined by excellence and her ability to lift those around her. After spending much of her career with the Sparks and a period with the Seattle Storm, she is currently playing for Los Angeles.
